Source Institution Element Help

Definition

Institution or sub-institutional source for the digital instance of the resource.

This differs from the Holding Location which usually represents the institution which houses the original item from which this digital resource is derived.

Of course, the source institution and holding location may be the same entity. In that case, the source institution usually holds the highlest level information about the institution ( i.e., "University of Florida" ) while the holding location may hold more specific information ( i.e., "Latin American Collections, University of Florida" ).

This form element allows the user to select the source institution's controlled code for the original item or file and (optionally) to type a different display name for the source institution.

Best Practices

The best practice for entering the source institution is to select the institution code from the controlled list.

There is no need to type the institution's name in the provided field, as the standard form of the institution's name will be stored when your update is saved. If you wish to use a non-standard for of the institution's name for any reason, you can type that into the provided field and it will be used instead.

If the code for an institution is not present, contact a system administrator to add that institution to the system.

SobekCM / MODS Encoding

The source information is encoded in the METS header and in a custom SobekCM tag within the bibliographic description portion. The code is encoded in the METS header and the code and statement appear in the custom SobekCM section. If no custom SobekCM section exists, an attempt is made to recreate the source institution name from a controlled list for the State Universities of Florida.
