Definition
Notes contain general textual information relating to a resource.1
Form Element
The online form element appears as below:
This form element allows the user to enter the note information directly. You cannot enter the note type, but you can add the text of your note, which will appear as a general note in the final resource.
Other form elements for entering note information include the standard Notes element.

Notes fields map from many different fields in the MARC record. Below are all the mapped MARC fields, with the resultant note type, and any additional notes on how the MARC data maps into the MODS note.

MODS to MARC Mapping
Mapping from the MODS back to MARC is generally the reverse of the procedure listed above. Additional considerations are listed here:
- Donation notes, Internal Comments, and Publication Status notes do not map into the MARC record.
- In addition, a note without a note type (general note) all map into the 500 field. This results in notes mapped from the 501, 513, 522, 563, 567, and 586 possibly mapping back into the 500. Notes without a note type but which do have display labels from the 522, 525, 567, and 586 map back into their appropriate tag.
- The text of the note is always mapped into the |a subfield, except for the Statement of Responsibility which maps back into the 245 |c.
