Greenstone Digital Library


Initially, the SobekCM system was built around, and as a presentation layer for, the Greenstone Digital Library system. Below is some of the information created during this period.

Greenstone has now been completely removed from the SobekCM system and all full-text searching occurs directly through Solr/Lucene. This documentation is retained for historic purposes and in case this approach can be useful for anyone in the future.

Greenstone within SobekCM

Initially, all full-text searching occured against the Lucene indexes which were built within a Greenstone collection. Therefore the metadata and full text associated with each item in SobekCM were converted into Greenstone-compliant metadata during the loading process. Greenstone Archival (GSA) files included all of the searchable metadata from the original METS file in qualified dublin core. An extension schema was also added to Greenstone to hold some of the searchable fields which were not differentiated in qualified dublin core.

When searching against a SobekCM-compliant Greenstone collection, only the resource identifier ( BibID and VID ) was returned in the search. The metadata to display in SobekCM was loaded from memory into a results table based on the resource identifier returned in XML (within HTML) by the Greenstone search.

Originally, Greenstone collections were built for each SobekCM collection, which meant the highest level collection groups were cross-collection searches in Greenstone. In 2009 this changed so that the highest aggregation level in SobekCM maps to each Greenstone collection. So, UFDC had about thirteen different Greenstone collections supporting searching. When a search was conducted across the entire digital library, this was still a cross-collection search.

Greenstone Metadata files for any item loaded in UFDC could be viewed by selecting Greenstone Metadata under the Metadata tab under the citation of an item being viewed.
